Oh yeah! IMHO stereo vision
Oh yeah! IMHO stereo vision is the way ahead, the way we all will track objects in the future - as opposed to all sorts of scanners & rangefinders.
I wrote about this somewhere else in a discussion with JIP; I want to get into that stuff one day. It will end all rangefinders of today!
2 cameras a computer, and you have a full 3D space mapped out in front of the bot! Add IR vision to this, and you can not only detect people, but a lot of very interesting things; See the radiation from a hot oven as a 3d "object", and make sure not to get near etc..
