My 10 year old niece saw my snailbot and decided she wanted her own robot to take over the world, and hence, CUBIE was born, the design anyway:design_001.jpgdesign_002.jpg

 Speakjet - cubie's voicebox

I got some new toys in the mail the other day, one of them was a Speakjet (http://magnevation.com/SpeakJet.swf) chip.

I've now got it working on breadboard, will have to make a pcb for it. heres a basic video of it in action:

box with eyes on it

This is the very pictogram for any robot. Just a rectangle with to eyes. I don't blame your niece. As a mather of fact, I too think Cubie looks cute.

Do I understand correct from the design plans that Cubie will move "sideways", relative to the direction of "vision"? Now that would be a refreshing design! Like a cross between a TV and a crab.

The metal case is (to me anyway, you may want to consult your client) one big invitation to build, ehhmm, "acoustic actuators" on the inside. Please don't make it just go BEEP.

OK, I am going to ahve to get one of these speakjet chips. That is way too cool not to mess around with.

Hear Her

hear hear! or here here! whichever.

Those sound effects are very appropiate for this design! Please inform us of the details of your implimentation. Like how you interfaced with the program editor in the video. And how you (will) implement this in the final design.

And how your niece responded!

Glad to know Cubie does not just go "beep" indeed.

The programs in the vid are

The programs in the vid are really simple, I just had three different programs for the video, the code that does the work looks like this:

serout 1,t2400,(20, 96, 21, 114, 22, 88, 23, 5, 8, 169, 8, 129, 187)

Theres a program on the speakjet website that translates phrases into the codes to use.

In the final implimentation I'll just send the phrases at random and some predetermined times, ie. when he gets stuck.

Jas hasn't seen it yet, I'll wait till its finished to show her, I told her it would be done by xmas.
