Challenge ends:
2009-01-01 20:

Update December 14, 2008

Since no one has submitted an entry yet, I'm going to push back the challenge ending date.  I won't give a specific date, but I will give at least a 1 month warning.  Once two robots are entered, that's probably when I will start to wrap this thing up.  And if no one ever enters ... well ... at least it was a fun idea.  :P

Finally, a bot that pays for itself!

The challenge is this: make a piggy bank robot.  I won't make any "rules" in order to allow complete creativity, but here's the basic idea ...

Make a robot that eats coins.  If it isn't fed, the bot gets weaker and weaker, and whines or begs for sustenance.  If the bot isn't fed coins for a few days, it dies.  You being a god amongst robots can revive it of course, but the loss would still be tragic.  Can you deal with a robot's death on your conscience?  I think not.  Better put some pocket change into your savings.

Other than eat coins, you can have it do whatever you want.  Maybe your bot searches the ground for shiny objects when it starts getting hungry.  Maybe it doesn't like the taste of pennies, or poops out dimes.  Maybe it does a little song and dance to earn its meal.  Get creative!!

I'd really love to see entries for this, so I'm offering a prize!!  $10 in US quarters (for use as robot food), mailed with the cheapest possible shipping to your location within a speedy few weeks!  ;)

I'll pick the winner come new year.  If there are not at least 2 entries by December 31, 2008, I'll extend the challenge to whatever seems appropriate.  Winner will be judged based on creativity, originality, and above all the "personality" of your poor, hungry bot.

Coin makeup

What's the makeup of coins in the US? Hmmm... How to distinguish between pennies and dimes... I was thinking "hall effect sensor." Over here pennies used to be made of copper, but now they're made of some ferrous material with a copper jacket. The "silver" coins are made of some ferrous material with a silvery coloured jacket.

Are you giving extra bonus points to somoene who can make a country-independant version?

Would the repurposing of this be considered cheating?

Mr Clean's picture

 You are welcome to use

You are welcome to use Euro coins, of course, and you'll get "bonus points," as you say, if it's original or creative.  If making it country-independent somehow makes it more interesting, yes, that would be a plus.

There aren't any firm rules here.  Yes, you can use the electronic coin jar, but remember that originality is important, and I might not like your bot as much if you just screw on a coin jar top.

As far as US coins go, their composition is listed here:

Funny? Why?

This is a brilliant challenge. I believe Frits would say: "I bet a techie couldn't do it..."

funny does not exclude brilliant

Maybe I have a somewhat maniacal response to sudden acts of brilliance.

Ok, so maybe I didn't actually build this, or put wheels on it, or .. well, ok, nevermind.

Hmmm .... looks like there

Hmmm .... looks like there are quite a few similar ideas out there.  But I know that you guys can be more creative than these mass-produced plastic pieces of junk!!

Yay! I can't wait to start

Yay! I can't wait to start on this!!!

I can start on it in a few weeks, so hopefully I won't be pressed for time to finish it.

I was thinking of adding a voice module to it so that if you don't feed it for a while, then give it a penny, it quips back with a not very nice response.

Plus, it gives me an excuse to buy a voice module ^_^

Fun Idea

Good thinking Mr Clean. I'll give it a go. Got a few spare parts lying around here somewhere.

It's been a couple of weeks

It's been a couple of weeks now, and I'm just checking in to see how it's going.  Is anyone going to enter this contest?  Has anyone started on a design ... or even started jotting down/sketching design ideas?  Does it look like I'm going to have to postpone the end date?
OddBot's picture

Ummm... Err..

I have a design in mind, gotta find the right part or it won't work but I haven't forgotten about it.
robologist's picture

Been thinkin'

Got some ideas, but haven't the means to work on right now. Hopefully get a chance to build something.
