Shooting mosquitoes with lasers

Straight out from Shoutbox I just snatched this:

gimmelotsarobots: On the bright side, mosquitos are now being killed by self guiding lasers. http://intellectualventureslab.com/?page_id=563

Searhced around, and found this cool video of death!

"Moooo" Rare Swiss Cow Project has begun

Following on from the Laser Experiments i have decided to attach it to some kind of walking Robot.

I am now a avid fan of Theo Jansen -  after rik brought him to light in his Blog.

So far i have Prototyped two pairs of "Theo" legs using "MindStorms" as an experimental base.

It worked better than i could have imagined - these legs go like a Cow on its way to the milking parlour.........

Only problem now is what  medium shall i use to make the final version.....

laser pointer and a 38khz sensor

would it be possible to make a laser flicker at 38khz?

I was thinking; if I had a modified laser that gave me a red dot that pulsed at 38Khz. If a robot was made to go towards a 38Khz beacon...

I thought this might function as a intuitive remote control.

The robot is programmed to do whatever, map its surrounding, search for metal or filming the girls gymn locker room. But when the laser is pointed anywhere in its vicinity it'll start following the red dot until the laser is switched of again. then it will continioue its original task.

Range scanner comparison?

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum, and fairly new to robotics.  I'm currently considering working on a research project involving multiple robots mapping an environment (something simple, like a wooden maze) together.  For the mapping I would need a fairly reliable range sensor.  I would very, very much appreciate some advice from seasoned robotics veterans such as many of you on this site!

Laser Tag and Recoil

Hello!

It's me and my laser tag project again. This time you'll read about me trying to find a solution to simulate the recoil of real weapons to make laser tag more realistic and cool to play.

First part of the page will be, as usual, the brainstorming part. That means that i really do not know what i'm gonna use for the recoil mecahnism (and if i will be using one, if it gets too complicated or costly i'll just abandon this idea) so i ask you for suggestions.

What does it have to do to properly simulate recoil?:

What distance sensors are better and best?

I am working on a much faster & stronger version of Robot Wall Racers, using quite fast RC-cars

I want to use lasers as distance sensors, but I think they will be a little over budget, altough this is a paid for job :)

Yes, SRF05's clai, they can detect a broomstick on 3 meters.. but in reality they are not stable before say 1.5 meters.

1.5 meters when you are traveling at 25km/h is NOT a lot, when you even are set up with drifting tyres.

can i still add a laser, speaker, led?

in my robot SC-QR-1 i have allready used all 8 servo-ports.

but can i still ad a laser(to see where it looks), a speaker(for it to call hor help or showing some sound-emotions..   etc.) and some leds(like a red to show power, white/bright to help my "primary-back-mounted-not-night-vision-spy-camera")

and if yes would the servos disturb the lasers, speaker and leds?

and i was also thinking, stuff like the sharp ir sensors have ir leds in them, could i attach an led or laser to those pins??

please reply!! :D

LASERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I have this laser tube lying around and I was wondering how to use it. It is a Helium-Neon (HE-NE) gas laser tube built by Uniphase.

horrible picture, just like most of mine

It's description is very vague, I'll read you the label.

Laser Range Finder MkII

This is my second attempt at a homemade laser range finder now with video. I nearly gave up after hearing about the Sharp IR sensors but I think this has potential as it focuses on an area the size of a laser pointer spot. The other sensors work on a much larger area. After a lot of frustration I've finally got all the circuitry working properly and hope to have a video posted as soon as I work out one last difficulty. Click on the photo for a full sized image. This is a work in progress, not a finished product.
